About the Park
An easy walking trail of 11 kilometres weaves through the park along Holden Lake. The trail takes you through a mature coastal Douglas Fir forest, interspersed with red alder and bi-leaf maple through to marsh lands that are equipped with a viewing platform. These ecosystems are perfect opportunities for bird watching. Look for trumpeter swans, eagles, and turkey vultures. Keep an eye out for the beavers and deer that inhabit the park. Holden Lake provides excellent opportunities for paddlers, boaters and anglers.

Hemer Park is located 12 km south of Nanaimo on Holden Lake. Take the Cedar Road exit from Hwy 1 follow signs to the park which is located on Hemer Road.

I am very privileged to live next to Hemer Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. This beautiful park borders Holden Lake and a trail follows along the lakeshore. The trail used to be a railroad bed which was used to transport coal from the coal mines at Extension, to Boat harbour to be loaded and shipped away. Roots from the trees cross along the trail and are straight and evenly spaced, as they followed the soil between the railroad ties. Nature recaptures that which was once industrial.

Super grateful to get out for a short hike today after being under the weather the last couple of weeks. Felt great to get out into the forest on a beautiful, sunny day.
